Course Objectives

• To understand the foundations of data communications technologies.
• To be able to configure a basic local area network.
• To analyze and evaluate current telecommunication options.
• To understand the basic elements of network security threats and mitigation.

Course Description

An introduction to network management and data communications. A focus on management issues including security and evaluating options. Covers the basics of communication technologies with an emphasis on Internet protocols.

Required Materials

White. Data Communications and Computer Networks: A Business User's Approach/3e Course Technology 2004.

Fundamental cases and exercises are detailed in the textbook. The specific assignments are listed in the following table.

Attendance

Attendance is the responsibility of the student. Historically, students who miss several classes tend to receive one grade lower than other students.

I will give "make-up" exams only in the case of emergencies. The student is responsible for notifying me before the scheduled test.

Assignments

Assignments are due at class time on the specified date. Late assignments might not be accepted and can be penalized 10% per day.

Cheating

If I find assignments that are copies of each other, all students involved will receive a zero for the assignment.
